That's fine - thanks very much.

After you dismiss the sign-in dialogue and the program opens, what does the right-most button on the Home tab of the ribbon look like? It should read Sign in - does it?

When I suggested earlier that you should Stop signing in to prevent the sign-in dialogue from appearing, you tried this and it worked, but you no longer had access to your contacts and calendar. Do you have access to them now?

The account you sign in with has no connection with any email account, although WLMail will try to make one. Which account is the default account is of no significance in this respect. The address box in your screenshot has a dropdown arrow at the right-hand end. This would suggest that you have at some stage signed in with a different account, listed in that dropdown. Can you Sign in with a different email address now using the button on the ribbon?

One last question at this stage - MS introduced two-step verification for sign-in a few weeks ago. I honestly don't know whether this could affect sign-in to WL services but not log-on to the mail account using the same address. However, if this is enabled for the account you're using, then WLMail won't be able to sign in because the second factor will be missing. Check whether you elected for this option at https://account.live.com/proofs/Manage. If you did, you'll apparently have to obtain and use an app password to enter in the dialogue.

Hi

1. Yes the right-most button does say sign in

2. If I use the 'stop signing in' option I do not have access to contacts when I want to forward an email to another recipient. By this I mean I do not get suggested contact names when I start to enter the contacts address in the 'to' section.   I do have access to my contacts list even though the right most button is  showing sign in.

3. I only get access to my full list of contacts  if I am signed in with my default email address.

4. If I sign in with a other Hotmail email accounts I only get access to the contacts relating to 'messenger' contacts.

5. No I have not elected to use the two step verification.

This problem started a couple of months ago, immediately following the suspension and reinstatement of my default account and the change of password, so in my opinion is clearly related to that change.

I have gone through the obvious stage of  opening the properties for the default account and ensuring that the correct password is entered .

Looks like I will just have to live with this minor problem.

Thanks

Thanks for a detailed answer. I'm still having trouble understanding what's happening. In your first reply in this thread, you wrote the warning box comes up and if I just click on the 'X' to close it , then I am signed in...  Now you say that if you do this, you're not signed in, which is what I would expect. The right-most button reads Sign in. This is what made me think that the 'warning box' in fact referred to a failed log-on to a mail account, not a failed sign-in to Windows Live. Your screenshot cleared that up, so now I'm stuck at trying to understand these statements:

... the warning box comes up and if I just click on the 'X' to close it , then I am signed in...
When you click on  the 'stop signing in' it does not allow you to sync with your contacts etc.
I do have access to my contacts list even though the right most button is  showing sign in.

I can only conclude that somehow you are being signed in automatically, but a fault somewhere is causing (a) the 'warning box' to appear saying that your sign-in failed and (b) the sign-in button on the ribbon to show the wrong state. I've not come across a similar situation in seven years of working with this program daily, so I reckon it's unique.

This fault could lie in the Windows Credentials Manager, or it could be in one of the files responsible for authentication. The only thing I would have suggested that might clear up the second of these possibilities is repairing the installation. This should ensure that all the files the program needs are present and correct and properly registered. Since you have re-installed the program, it would be worthwhile repairing it again. With all programs closed, type wlarp into the start search box and press Enter. In the window that opens, select Repair..., and when it's finished reboot the computer. Then try launching Windows Live Mail again.

I'm not sure about how to handle stored credentials. My own inclination would be simply to delete all stored Windows Live credentials and allow them to be re-created next time you enter them. Perhaps a forum mod could ask a product specialist how best to go about this.

Hi Firstly let me apologise for causing you confusion. I am a septuagenarian silver surfer so at times confuse myself.

1.  In my initial thread I did say that when I dismissed the warning box, I was signed in. I never look at the right most button  , I just assume that if I can access my mail etc. I am signed in.

2. Yes if I use the 'stop signing in function' then I do not get the auto suggested contact when I start to input the address into new mail or fwd. mail.

3. When the right most button shows 'sign in'  and I am not using the  'stop signing in 'function then the auto suggest system works.

4. Yes  I tend to agree that I am automatically signed in but something somewhere is deciding I am not !!!!

5 As for the windows credentials manager I would have no idea as to where to find that. I do see in my 'local app data' folder that I have at least 3 separate folders named  Window Live but they all contain different sub folders. or does this add to the confusion.??

6.Today again, I have done a clean uninstall as per Helene's instructions and then a complete reinstall, a reboot and as the problem was still there, I did the  'wlarp' repair as per your instruction, reboot and yes the mystery box still appears.

The interesting thing is when I had occasion to uninstall WML about 12/18 months ago and reinstalled it , I had to add all of my email accounts to the new installation. Now when I reinstall it opens with all of my accounts, messages, contacts already on there.

Thank you for all of your help but I am prepared to admit defeat and just accept that I must  sign in on each occasion or  just click my mouse and dismiss the warning box.

Hi likelylad650,

Thank you for the additional information you have provided us.

I understand that you are unable to sign in to your Windows Live Mail on a particular computer. I suggest that you optimize your Internet Explorer's cache. Internet Explorer and Windows Live Mail is somehow connected and just to make sure that it is not causing the issue, I am suggesting the option I have mentioned above. For assistance, refer to the link below:

How to optimize Internet Explorer

Let us know the results.

Regards,

Camille

Hi Camille Your understanding of my problem is incorrect. I know this is a very long thread and takes time to read.

My problem is not that I cannot sign in, it is that I am signed in but a warning box tells me that I am using the wrong email address or password and to try again.

I just dismiss this warning box  and can access my windows live mail even though the  right-most button on the home tape tells me to sign in.

So as ifiredog said, I am signed in but somehow it is telling me I am not signed in.

as I said in my previous post , maybe we should admit defeat on this mystery technical problem.

Thanks
